For a painter, content is intrinsically linked to process. For example, the way a painter makes a mark, or the materials he/she selects or the layering strategies he/she develops to establish line, color, form and surface --- all speak to content, all reveal ‘what the work is about’. 

In this workshop the focus is process. Students will be introduced to and experiment with the layering of specific materials which may assist them in their development of “subject matter and the execution of ideas”. 

The goal of the workshop is to help students discover their particular artistic intentions within a defined framework of layering strategies, including: collage, photographic transfer, masking and plaster. 

The layering processes presented in this workshop are the result of my personal experimentation with materials over a century of working. Students will ‘try-out’ my methods with the intention of ultimately discovering their own.
