Like the woodblock, linoleum can serve as a simple “relief” printmaking device. Because of its relative softness, it became a medium for making prints. The area that is not cut away picks up the rolled-on ink, which transfers onto paper when the block is placed in a press. In this class, we will draw and transfer an image to the lino-block, create proofs and develop the block. We will print our image in in black and white and individual colors. We will learn different inking techniques for creating a variety of images including a “blind emboss and “rainbow roll” image. In this process, inks are spread as a band of colors forming a “rainbow” which is applied to the linoleum, then printed onto paper.
