Stir it Up:  Carving Spoons by Hand:

Thanks to its convex and concave curves, a spoon is both a useful utensil and a great way to practice the ins and outs of woodcarving.  Beginners will learn the key steps applicable to any carving project:  layout, roughing, shaping, and finishing.  More experienced carvers will increase their efficiency, learn alternative approaches, and embellish their basic form with carved details.  Students may wish to bring their own carving knife or small set of hand tools (shopping suggestions provided), which they will learn to maintain.  We’ll work in fruit wood and seal our pieces with foodsafe finishes, so your carved spoon will be both pleasing and practical.

Student’s Supplies: 1 sharp C- or U-shaped chisel (if possible), 1 x-acto style handle, approx 5 x-acto or scalpel blades, pencil, sketchbook, cut-proof glove if desired

Instructor will provide:  wood, sharpening equipment for in-class use, food safe oil and wax, shared chisels
